Academic Appointments

In the Institute of Advanced Studies, academic staff carry the titles of professor, senior fellow, fellow, research fellow and postdoctoral fellow. Vacancies are normally advertised in Australia and overseas. Appointment may be for a specified fixed term, or for an initial period with provision for reappointment following review for a further term of appointment (renewable fixed term), or for a long term appointment, eg for twenty years. Fractional appointments may be available. There is provision for appointment of staff on secondment from other institutions for a fixed period in some circumstances.

General conditions

Appointment as research fellow (fixed-term) is normally for three years initially, and may be extended to a maximum of five years.

Appointment as postdoctoral fellow is for a period of up to three years.

The initial term of appointment for positions advertised as 'renewable fixed term' is normally five years, with the possibility of five year extensions following review.

A clinical loading of $14 715 per annum is paid to a medically qualified full-time professor, senior fellow, fellow or research fellow undertaking patient care. For qualified staff not having responsibility for patient care the medical loading is $7 368 per annum.

Assistance with fares and removal expenses to Canberra and with finding housing is provided for the persons appointed and for a dependent spouse or children.

Superannuation benefits are available for appointees eligible to contribute. Approval may be given to members of the academic staff to undertake programs of studies away from the University.
