The financial challenges faced by research institutions such as the John Curtin School make it increasingly important to obtain financial support, both cash and kind, from a variety of sources as well as ensuring that the general community has a much stronger awareness of the School and its activities. This will become particularly relevant as plans develop for the much-needed new building.

While the School's reputation within the national and international medical and scientific community is high its relationships with the general public, including potential supporters, have not always received the same attention. In July the School appointed Ms Bea Brickhill as its first Development Manager.

Ms Brickhill, who brings considerable experience in marketing, fundraising and development gained in the arts and heritage, is working with staff and existing supporters such as the Strategic Advisory Committee to increase the Schools financial base through donations and bequests from individuals as well as partnerships with sponsors and foundations.

The School would particularly like to acknowledge the following support during 2001:
Dr Joyce Fildes, for endowment of the Joyce Fildes Honours Scholarship
The Estate of the late Friedel Oster in memory of Madeleine Lustig, for cancer research

The Curtin Circle (for those who have remembered the School in their will)
Miss Margaret Atkinson
